So what does “Mem Tara” mean? Based on the accounts of locals in Darjeeling, the term “Mim” is believed to have its roots in the regional Nepali dialect, specifically “Mem Saheeb.” This expression is used to honor and respectfully address a lady, akin to saying “Ma’am” in English. In the context of this tea, it is a heartfelt tribute to all the extraordinary women who shine like stars within their families, their presence indispensable. When translated from Nepali to English, “Mem Tara” holds the meaning of “Lady Star” or “Star Lady.”
The Mim Tea Garden, situated in the picturesque Darjeeling hills, holds a rich history spanning over 150 years. Originally established by British Planter Mr Andrew Yule in the 19th Century, the garden offers a magnificent view of the Rangeet River Valleys and the majestic Kunchenjungha Massif. The estate of Mim is renowned for producing premium quality orthodox tea, known for its light orange-colored liquor with a delicate floral aroma, a touch of astringency, and a musky spiciness referred to as “muscatel” by tea connoisseurs.
