Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the most common form of heart disease and affects about 20% of the adult population in many countries. Research says, regular tea drinkers who drank 2 cups or more a day have lower total and LDL cholesterol. According to the issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine, Taiwan, people who drank at least a half-cup of moderate strength green, black or oolong tea per day for a year had a 46% lower risk of developing hypertension than those who didn’t drink tea. Among those who drank more than two and a half cups of tea per day, the risk of high blood pressure was reduced by 65%.
According to published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Sweden, women who drank at least 2 cups of tea per day were half as likely to develop ovarian cancer as non drinkers; those who drank at least 1 cup of tea a day had a 24% lower risk. It also says, each additional cup of tea over two cups per day was associated with an additional 18% reduction in ovarian cancer risk. This is due to potent anti-cancer compounds found in green and black teas. The same theory also applies for breast cancer in women.
American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) had published a study where it mentioned that those who consumed more than two cups of tea per day developed chronic liver disease at half the rate of those who drank less than one cup each day. There has been a growing body of evidence that tea decreases the risk of elevated liver enzymes, cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Mayo clinic researchers treated four chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) patients with green tea extract tablets containing epigallocatechin gallate. Within a few months times, doctors found out that three out of four patients were showing signs of the cancer regressing. The fourth one showed slight improvement but was not judged to be clinically relevant. Green tea is been studied to have cancer fighting capabilities and such research is showing new hope to the CLL patients.
Dr Kuzushige Kawai and colleagues at the University of Tokyo carried out tests to see if the chemical could help beat HIV. Their laboratory tests suggest a chemical called Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) protects cells. It was revealed that EGCG stopped the virus from binding to CD4 molecules and human T cells which are vital parts of the body’s immune system. But a further research is needed to properly implement it. Hoping that someday some miracle will happen to eradicate this disease for well and good. Lets hope for the best.
