About This Turzum Tea First Flush 2024

Nestled in Darjeeling’s Rungbong Valley, the Sungma and Turzum Tea Estate is renowned for its exceptional quality teas. Established by British planters sometime between 1863 and 1868, it came under the ownership of Jayshree Tea in 1993.

The estate enjoys a cool and misty climate with temperatures varying between 3°C in winter and 28°C in summer. It receives ample rainfall, ranging from 2500 to 3000 mm annually during the monsoon months (July to September). Situated approximately 30 kilometers from Darjeeling town, the estate boasts easy access by road.

Originally two separate estates – Sungma and Turzum – they merged in 1934 due to an earthquake that destroyed the Sungma tea factory. Today, their teas are still marketed individually under their respective names. A crucial distinction sets these gardens apart: Sungma is comprised almost entirely of China jat bushes, while Turzum boasts nearly 100% clonal tea bushes. China jat bushes are a prized variety known for their distinctive classic Darjeeling character, while clonal bushes produce a more consistent yield that is more smoother and rounded. The Sungma and Turzum Tea Estate has thrived under Jayshree Tea’s ownership. The company has continuously invested in tea cultivation, replanting programs, employee well-being, and modernizing the tea manufacturing infrastructure, ensuring the estate’s continued success.

Dry Tea Leaves (Turzum Darjeeling First Flush)

This meticulously crafted clonal graded tea retains all the qualities that have made Darjeeling tea famous. The elongated, well-rolled leaves boast a beautiful greenish hue, a captivating blend of light and bottle green. While the darker flecks might appear black from afar, a closer look reveals a fascinating interplay of chocolate brown and bottle green. The tea is further enriched with an abundance of elongated silver tips, some boasting a golden hue. Most leaves are adorned with a delicate white down, lending the tea a lustrous, blooming appearance.

The aroma of this Turzum Tea Estate’s tea is a delightful combination of sweetness, with subtle hints of cake and pastry. A touch of caramelized character adds depth, complemented by a nutty finish. Beyond these, the tea offers a refreshing floral scent reminiscent of wildflowers, and a subtle fruitiness akin to freshly cut apples.

Steeped Turzum tea presents a visually delightful infusion. The base color is a lovely green, imbued with a spectrum of pale yellows. These pale tones originate primarily from the buds, which shimmer due to a fine layer of wet, silver hairs. This glistening quality contributes to the vibrancy of the infusion, and can also be seen as an indicator of superior liquor quality. The aromatic profile of Turzum is equally inviting. It opens with a fresh and sweet floral character, accompanied by a subtle hint of vegetal notes. A touch of vanilla essence adds a touch of comforting sweetness, while mild pastry-like aromas weave their way into the mix. This is further complemented by a hint of fruity notes reminiscent of fresh apples. A subtle nuttiness rounds out the experience, mingling with a very mild spiciness that lingers in the background. Cup or Liquor characteristics (Turzum Darjeeling Tea)

Despite the tea season, clonal varieties always tend to be lighter in the cup compared to the China variety. Clonals are generally larger in size than Chinery teas, though smaller clonal leaves can yield a stronger brew. The principle is simple: the smaller the tea leaves, the stronger the cup; the larger the leaves, the lighter the cup. This tea has a honey-toned, light golden-yellow liquor that is bright and highly aromatic. It offers a smoother cup with a desirable, complex, fragrant floral aroma, accompanied by a very mild biscuity taste. The lively, brisk flavor sparkles and bursts in the mouth, creating a highly invigorating experience. Turzum tea is sweet, with vanilla-like and floral notes, alongside hints of fruit and almond. It has minimal astringency and leaves a sweet aftertaste on the tip of the tongue.

Brewing Tips

Water

Use plain filtered or spring water abundance in oxygen. Do not re-use already boiled water for the taste may appear flat.

Temperature

It can be from 175-185 Degree F. Since the tea leaves are larger and delicate, higher temperatures seem to cook it. If your water is too hot, let it cool down for a while.

Quantity of Tea leaves

Standard procedure says 2.5 grams per 100 ml of water, but may not be correct as it is complex due to different cultivars, leaf sizes and make. For this it is recommended you use around one and a half tea spoonful per mug of tea.

Steeping Time

Steeping time for this tea is 3-4 minutes.

I served several teas for my mother. She said this and one of the clonal varieties were best. None from the ‘local’ Danish market were at this level.

The Turzum 2018 First Flush has a classic Darjeeling floral aroma that extends to the lovely, smooth, complex palate. A bit of experimentation is necessary to get the best results – a relatively cool infusion with extra leaf, for 3 minutes or a bit longer (hint: pour into a cup that has been preheated with boiling water). Close to 5-star quality, and in fact would have obtained that score were it not that I had consumed it concurrently with a different tea that I found a bit better.
